A pretty special track from Ed Harcourt (and equally special accompanying video directed by Matt Mahurin), Furnaces is the title track from his forthcoming album out on 19 August.
A Mercury Prize nominee for his debut Here Be Monsters, Harcourt has enjoyed a unique career as a songwriter, producer, musician and all round everyman. He’s played live with the Libertines, toured as part of Marianne Faithful’s band and served as Musical Director for Beck’s Songbook shows at the Barbican.
His seventh studio album has all the rich complexity that his fans would expect. “I wanted to make a record that people can cry, fuck and fight to,” says Harcourt. “I don’t think there are many records out like that at the moment, but all my favourite records have that, whether it’s Prince or Nine Inch Nails. I hadn’t made a record before that has this kind of danger to it.”
The album has even more added artistry, with artwork by the legendary Gonzo artist and Hunter S Thompson collaborator Ralph Steadman, which Harcourt describes as “a dream come true”.
