Nottingham-born singer-songwriter Jake Bugg brought his solo acoustic show to Manchester’s Albert Hall last month, performing songs from his fourth studio album Hearts That Strain – as well as earlier material, as part of a 16-date tour across the UK and Ireland.

It was a serious, low-key affair in which Bugg – just he and his guitar under a single spotlight – attempted to bring a sense of intimacy to a larger venue. It’s a tough proposition to pull-off (not least with a crowd that is more in the mood to party than simply stand and listen), but it’s testament to Bugg’s undoubted talent that he largely makes it work.
